Sweating is a critical human detox function, yet most people don’t sweat regularly or enough. Sweating helps the body make use of the skin’s ability to eliminate toxins. And what better way to get up a sweat than with a Sunlighten infrared sauna?
We hear from Connie Zack, co-owner and Chief Sales Officer of Sunlighten, and Dave Asprey, founder & CEO of Bulletproof and bestselling author, about how to unlock the power of a Sunlighten infrared sauna for reducing inflammation, detoxification, and boosting immunity.
What is the difference between a traditional steam sauna and Sunlighten’s infrared saunas?
The difference is in how the heat is delivered into the body. With a traditional steam and heat-based sauna, it warms you by warming the air around you - similar to being outside on a hot day. That’s why, for many, traditional saunas feel like an oppressive heat.
On the other hand, infrared saunas work by delivering heat directly into your body through wavelengths that easily access and transform the body from the inside out. It is two completely different experiences, and two completely different outcomes. Heat is good for your body, but the delivery method of that heat is what makes the difference.
Can you tell us more about how the wavelengths work?
The principal is: the hotter the wavelength, the shorter the wavelength is and the more difficult it is for them to enter the body. On the other hand, the cooler the wavelength, the longer it is, and the easier it is for the wavelength to enter the body.
Sunlighten has mastered the optimum wavelength to the micron level that is scientifically proven to penetrate the body to its deepest level, so that the body can absorb the wavelength and transform or renew. Different parts of the infrared light spectrum have unique benefits such as improving cell health, quickening muscle recovery, reducing inflammation, lowering blood pressure and more.
Are different wavelengths related to different benefits?
Near infrared or ‘NIR’ is the shortest wavelength and in its natural form, it is extremely hot as it is closest to the sun. For optimum ‘NIR’, it needs to be converted to LED to deliver it effectively at a wavelength of 880nm, when it becomes scientifically proven to speed up wound healing, increase collagen, rejuvenate cells and strengthen our immune system. This is particularly useful for athletes who use NIR to aid muscle recovery and to reduce inflammation.
Far-infrared or ‘FIR’ significantly increases core body temperature, which activates heat shock proteins in the body that strengthen the immune system, increase blood flow and circulation, and lower blood pressure.
Then there is Mid Infrared or ‘MIR’, which is somewhere in between - not as hot as NIR but hotter than FIR with a shorter wavelength. This is often used to reduce inflammation in the joints, muscle and tissues and assists people living with degenerative or autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. It also aids FIR for weight loss and detoxification.
It is important to know that the body responds very differently to each unique wavelength and Sunlighten is the only infrared sauna company to develop a unique and patented 3-in-1 technology that combines three heating elements in one infrared sauna heater.
What are some of the major benefits of infrared saunas on our immunity?
Dave: I refer to my Sunlighten infrared sauna as my ‘Biohacking Secret’ because every time I use it, I come out stronger, faster, thinner and happier.
Connie: Particularly important during cold and flu season, infrared saunas increase core temperature and activate Heat Shock Proteins to help with the antiviral effect. We have 'tuned' the dose to ensure that the body is receiving the maximum amount of infrared and, therefore, the maximum amount of benefit.
What is Sunlighten’s ‘secret’?
This is not a secret we want to keep but - every part of a Sunlighten infrared sauna is intentional, from the type of wood used to the design and construction of the infrared sauna itself, and even our patented magnetic mechanism. We have mastered the wavelengths that offer maximum infrared into the body to help it renew and transform, because we want to work with our body’s natural processes to super charge our cells.
There are also mental health benefits and a link between increasing core temperature and a decrease in depression symptoms, according to research led by Professor Charles Raison who examined: physical and behavioral effects of heat stress as a potentially therapeutic intervention for major depressive disorder.
