Infrared Saunas and Athletic Performance

Infrared saunas can assist performance in the following ways:

• Remedially, to assist with recovery from a certain state or condition; and
• Pro-actively, to support general wellness.

Here are some of the potential advantages:

Increased flexibility and joint health

As an athlete, it is imperative that you protect yourself from injury and we understand the role that flexibility and joint health can play in your body’s resilience.

So how can you best use a sauna?

We recommend you try stretching in infrared saunas. A research study has shown that stretching in infrared saunas can display significant improvements in flexibility, particularly in the hips, hamstrings and lower back.

These improvements can be attributed to the quality of infrared heat. Solocarbon™ heating can assist in flushing out lactic acid, consequently helping muscles to loosen. Stretching in the sauna also enhances your mobility which in turn can speed up your recovery process.

Sunlighten Athlete Chloe Georgievski shows the importance of flexibility in sports like Taekwondo.

Weight loss and cardiovascular health

Simply sitting in a sauna increases core body temperature and heart rate as the body works to cool itself, assisting with burning calories throughout your session.

The body has to work hard to cool itself, causing a healthy sweat. A research study showed that using an infrared sauna can increase heart rate, cardiac output and metabolic rate, burning more calories.1

Please note that the weight loss program should not be used to overstress your body and we recommend that you stay hydrated throughout.

Detoxification and immune system support

Harmful toxins are all around us and can cause substances such as heavy metals to build up in the body. This can have a negative effect on your immune system, which if damaged can interrupt your training and preparation.

A study done by NASA showed that near infrared heating delivered by LEDs deep into body tissue, can quadruple cell health and tissue growth.3

Detoxification through infrared saunas helps to sweat out the toxins residing in your system, leaving you feeling fresh and healthy.

Pain Relief

Chances are that your body has been under stress from intense training and competition. A program in an mPulse sauna is available to target pain relief by providing a deep infrared heat.

If you are carrying an injury or suffering from general soreness, infrared heat can penetrate your muscles to assist with blood flow in affected areas.

Overall, an infrared sauna is a wellness tool that every athlete can use as part of their regime to assist in reaching peak performance.
